Have you been suffering from sinusitis for the longest time and are barely getting by with medications? This may be the wrong approach to take. If your sinuses are no longer responding well to medication, then now is the best time to look for other alternatives.
In a study[1] commissioned by ACCLARENT late last year, people who suffered from chronic rhinosinusitis and underwent a balloon sinuplasty showed far greater improvement than those who depended solely on medication.
If you’ve had enough of the congestion, headaches, and facial pain that sinusitis brings, a balloon sinuplasty procedure is definitely something to look into.
About the Study
The ACCLARENT study was composed of 198 patients that have been diagnosed with chronic rhinosinusitis. A total of 105 patients underwent an in-office balloon sinuplasty procedure, while 52 patients continued on with the medical management of their sinusitis.
After 24 weeks, the results showed that the people who underwent a balloon sinuplasty operation had an improvement on the quality of life compared to those who went down the medication route.
The study confirms the fact that a stand-alone balloon sinuplasty procedure shows a superior outcome than medical management. “We finally have high-level evidence that for sufferers of chronic sinusitis, balloon dilation of the sinuses does a better job of improving quality of life than just staying on medications,” says Dr. Spencer Payne of the University of Virginia.
If you want further medical proof that the procedure works, another study[2] showed positive outcome from 1,036 patients who underwent balloon sinuplasty. An overwhelming number of patients (95.2%) showed a huge improvement on their sinus symptoms after surgery.
Instant Relief That Lasts
According to the CDC, chronic sinusitis is a medical problem that has been plaguing almost 30 million Americans.[3] Most of these people treat their sinusitis using over-the-counter or prescription drugs; unfortunately, most of these medication provide minimal and temporary benefit.
Balloon sinuplasty, on the other hand, is a medical procedure that makes use of a balloon to open up the sinus passages, allowing patients to experience instant relief from symptoms associated with chronic sinusitis. During the procedure, an LA sinus doctor inserts a balloon catheter in the sinus. The balloon is then inflated to expand the sinus cavities, and saline is used to drain the mucus out of the nose. And because this type of operation is less invasive than traditional sinus surgery, the natural form and structure of the nose is preserved. There is also less trauma involved in the sinus area, meaning there is less scarring and faster recovery times.
Sinusitis can be an extremely vexing medical condition to treat. Not only does it provide a lot of discomfort, it can also be expensive. Instead of having to always reach for that tissue and buying costly sinus medication, you can get a balloon sinuplasty, which provides longer-lasting results.
