What is a Deviated Septum?

Feb 12, 2016
Most cases of deviated septum are generic, meaning they develop naturally according to the blueprints we all carry inside us. But others can be caused by an injury or disease which leaves the cartilage inside the nose displaced to one side or another.

Most cases of deviated septum are generic, meaning they develop naturally according to the blueprints we all carry inside us. But others can be caused by an injury or disease which leaves the cartilage inside the nose displaced to one side or another.

As this video explains, deviated septum can lead to a number of of health issues, but not every one of these automatically requires surgery:

If you didn’t catch that list, some of the issues people experience with a deviated septum include: “chronic difficulty with breathing through the nose, recurrent sinusitis, chronic nosebleeds, or post-nasal drip that is chronic.”

It’s a difficult situation for many people, which is why I see many patients with deviated septum in my LA sinus surgery practice. Most of these can be resolved quickly with septal surgery, leaving them with far better symmetry and easier breathing for the rest of their lives.
