Deviated septum is an extremely common condition. In fact it’s more common than not: four out of five adults have a septum that is deviated to one side or the other.

The symptoms of a deviated septum are hard to miss, especially if they hound you throughout your life. They include issues such as nosebleeds, snoring, and dry mouth, as well as breathing difficulties when you’re lying on your side or engaged in vigorous exercise.

But there is another issue associated with deviated septum that isn’t medical at all. In some cases, a deviated septum creates visible asymmetry in the face that many people find distracting. Many individuals with severely deviated septums report that this asymmetry affects their confidence, even leading them to avoid being seen from certain angles.

Treating the symptoms of a deviated septum is different from fixing the problem itself. You could try decongestants or antihistamines for a blocked airway. Nasal steroid sprays can also help with irritation and inflammation, giving some patients immediate relief from the pain and pressure of their condition.

But the only true way to solve the problem of a deviated septum is with a surgical procedure known as nasal septal surgery, or septoplasty. This procedure involves creating a small incision inside the nose, and then gently realigning the septal wall under anesthesia. Once the incision is closed, there is no visible scar. Healing takes a couple of weeks, and may be aided by steroidal sprays or a device known as the Propel sinus stent, which accelerates the process. When it’s over, your deviated septum is cured for good.

At the LA Sinus Institute, we are septoplasty experts. To get the very best treatment and cures for septal issues, we urge you to reach out and make an appointment with Dr. Mani Zadeh today.
