Sinus surgery is our specialty at the Los Angeles Sinus Institute. As a respected clinic dedicated to the safe and effective treatment of sinus symptoms throughout the Southland, we spend a good amount of time discussing the pros and cons of various sinus surgery procedures. There is no one-size-fits-all surgical approach to sinus symptoms, which is why we measure each of our efforts against the individual history and goals of our patients.

It’s important to note that sinus surgery is also not a first-step solution. Typically when a patient comes to us with sinus pressure, pain, or related symptoms, we exhaust all of the nonsurgical options available before moving anyone into the OR. These include the use of corticosteroids, antibiotics, irrigation techniques, and sleep/rest. Only when these approaches fail – or the problem is significantly advanced already – do we consider the options outlined below.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

The most popular, and well-established, approach is known as endoscopic sinus surgery. An endoscope is a small tool that fits up into the sinus through the nostril, and can be manipulated remotely to control very small medical instruments such as scalpels and debriders. Endoscopic sinus surgery is generally faoroed for cases where anatomical changes must be performed, including the removal of tissue and the reshaping of existing bone and cartilage. This image-guided system is also used for polyp removal and turbinate reduction, among others.

Septoplasty

A similar procedure is designed to correct a deviated septum, and is known as septoplasty. This procedure leaves no scar – the instruments are inserted via wire through the nostril, so that the nasal septum can be gently moved into place remotely. Because these are sensitive tissues, you may receive corticosteroids or a device known as a Propel stent after the procedure to help the healing continue swiftly and safely. The result is a more improved anatomical profile for breathing on either side of your nose.

Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon sinuplasty is the least invasive of these procedures, and can be performed on an outpatient basis. A small wire is threaded up into the site of an obstructed sinus cavity, and placed within the ostia, or drainage hole. A very small balloon is inflated to create a better opening, allowing mucus to drain again and relieve the pressure of sinus infection. Balloon sinuplasty is fast and effective; most people return to work the very same day,
